WONDER WOMEN // SISTER Studios, Radical Fashion Sisterhood
We first met Emma and Alice from SISTER when they moved into the adjoining studio to ours at Homework Studios. It wasn't long before we were smitten by their energy and joyful approach to life and work, but we also fell in love with their awesome jumpsuits! We started wearing them and they quickly began appearing in our photoshoots because they seemed to work so radically well together with our shoes!
In SISTER we found a shared love for a bit of crazy, wacky, radicalness and a passion for life and their work. Being independent and free willed, doing their own thing is what makes SISTER radical, yes!
Tell us about your creative process. Do you have any work rituals or habits you follow?
We have accumulated so many unofficial work rituals. We always sit down to a coffee or some breaky first to get all our funny chats out of the way. Chatting about what we’ve been doing, eating and listening to for the week before dreaming up designs. We then head to the studio and eventually get deep in the necessary tasks for that day. After a few hours we both need another break. We might end the day with a meeting with our sales manager Kim, usually homemade pasta and some wine. Conversations about Sister dilute back into general life and friendship talk.
Describe your work environment. How does the space / location influence you?
We have a studio in Brunswick at Homework studios, which is a great communal/ open plan environment. Our business got serious once we moved out from the living room and into this fresh setting. Our studio is bright and social, Ladies of Leisure and Rittle King are some other young creatives in our space who we always learn so much from. Being in Brunswick is perfect for us, we are close to our maker, fabric stores and delish places to eat, when we need a distraction.
We love the positive mood of your Instagram account, especially your dance videos! What are some of your favourite tunes to listed to in the studio that keep you guys moving?
Thanks! We love breaking up our work day by making a video and having a big old dance. We usually get some of the babes from the other spaces involved, whether its filming or helping us set up our silly scenarios and dancing in the background. We have been listening to loads of Larry Heard lately to get ready for his show in Melbourne in a couple of weeks. And we love digging up old classics for a good sing along
Tells us 3 things you always say YES to.
We always say YES to working on a dance routine or making a video.
We always say YES to going to some out of the way suburb for no reason but to get some yum lunch/ find dead stock fabric.
We always say YES to FOOD!
What does being radical mean to you?
Being radical to us means ditching work to go and hang out in nature.
