In a past life I studied film and pretended that one day I could end up working in Hollywood. Since that never eventuated we decided instead to become recognition sponsors of the brilliant Melbourne Women in Film Festival
and learn from real professionals about the most inspiring female things happening on screen.
The festival is now in it's second year and presents a diverse range of films both past and present, that celebrate and support the work of women filmmakers and creatives. So in the spirit of all things cinematic, we felt it fitting to present 3 shoes from our AW18 collection we will absolutely be wearing to the movies this season…
Outfit one revolves around our latest vegan incarnation, the 'Plenty' shoe in Black Glitter
complete with always theatrical grosgrain ribbon laces. Asides from being vegan (kindness forever!), this shoe features a squared off toe shape that for us neatly references a man-style Annie Hall look.
Channeling the mood at the movies, for us we are imagining fitted bell bottom tweed suit pants, rolled sleeve white shirts and perhaps even a button down vintage vest for the full literal mood on these classic jazz flats. Think New York in the 70s brilliance for inspiration.
Referencing a similar genre in a different mood, the inimitable Jane Birkin once told WWD that “I’d rather be dressed as a man.” We have to argue that with her languid boyfriend shirts, perfectly fitted denims and casual ballet flats the trick to her man-style dressing was splicing an outfit with gently feminine details. Think fine gold chains and rattan baskets and your more than halfway there.
It’s this kind of mood we feel our new Moon Dance
ballet toe tappers easily illicit. The lace detail is costume like and playful and lends theatre to otherwise ‘basic’ outfits. Putting them high on our movie outfit rotation list, we will be wearing these toe tappers a la Birkin with fitted turtlenecks, cropped denims and an oversized dust coat for lackadaisically put-together elegance.
Our AW18 collection
also considers equestrian elements that make for easy evening out dressing. You can see this translated best in our absolutely perfect ‘True Self’ Black croc boots
. With a lace detail that is set on a broad separation, the tongue has been executed in texturally contrasting black suede. This means they not only feel really soft in all the right places on the foot (despite the rigid leather of the side facings), but they also ‘corset up’ and gather in a really interesting way through the vamp. Not dissimilar in mood or execution to the kind of details you might have seen in the 1940s stockman era costumes that Catherine Martin won an Academy Award for in Baz Luhrmann’s otherwise mixed-review 2008 bio-epic ‘Australia’.
For our own adventure on a night out, we will be considering these beauties with structured blazers that nip at the waist and fitted through the hip, long line skirts that allow the perfectly proportioned height of our new ‘Day heel’ last to peep through. Make no mistake - the these shoes command a type of centeredness and feeling of control that is almost worthy of a whip… Radical Yes!
