Something we hear people say a lot in The Fitting Salon is that they love flat shoes, but they find it difficult to wear them with dresses.
After five years of running our brand, you could say we are super passionate about the liberation that flat shoes can bring to a wonder woman’s life, but we also understand the dilemma of wanting to feel dressed up, despite your choice to stay grounded.
With all this in mind below we share a few ideas on ways we style up our low-profile beauties with dresses to help inspire your own cosmic dress up wanderings.
WEAR THEM WITH LONG HEMLINES
Nothing we love more than the relaxed feeling of super long line dresses especially in tran-seasonal months like Autumn. As close as you can get to a grown-ups pyjama-day, we love to play up the loungey mood of this look with our equally relaxed Abundance lace ups. Accent our favourite super luxe soft Pink Suede option with Grey Jersey as shown here to channel a truly millennial take on the palette that will transition all the way through Spring.
WEAR THEM WITH TEXTURAL FINISHES
Nothing says winter dressed up more than Velvet. It is warm, comfortable and channels the most perfect Stevie Nicks 70s vintage vibe. It’s the best reason matching anything velvet – whether it be skirts or dresses - to a pair of flat shoes can be enough drama to add to your outfit, allowing the shoes to be a cool anchor rather than a full obtuse take over the way heels can.
Our pick in this category is to try a lace up like our True Self Boots in Black Floral Satin. The satin makes a playful mix with velvet, whilst the corset inspired lacing maintains the 70s glam rock influence – and the best news is you are going to be both warm AND comfortable.
WEAR THEM WITH DENIM SKIRTS
Daytime game strong! Denim always adds a utility and functionality that we can’t go past – naturally forgiving of the standard everyday slips and spills that happen vis-a-vis the four-year-old, your lunchtime poké bowl or hanging-in-the-studio meanderings. We prefer deep indigo washes in denim skirts for all of the above reasons and love to do complete colour blocking experiments in Navy tones with our perennial favourite Abundance lace ups in Midnight Suede for kicks.
WEAR THEM WITH A BLAZER OVER THE DRESS
Fastest short-cut to feeling put together for us, every time is a blazer. The best thing about blazers is they can be worn in so many ways – casual for contrast, structured for more literal takes or perched on shoulders for a total power dressing moment (thank you Phoebe Philo), but put them over a dress and the silhouette becomes uniquely feminine. It’s the reason this garment works so well with a flat shoe because it can help to gently up the ante on the man-style lines of the blazer.
Blazers in cream tones work really well with dark shoes again because of the contrast – it’s the reason our True Self – Black Croc boots work just as well with the look as a pair of our perfectly cut Blessed Ballet slippers.
