Maybe you have been looking longingly at our new printed styles and loved them as objects - but when it comes to actually wearing them a moment of apprehension sets in as you start thinking ‘Beautiful...however that’s a whole lot of shoe to find outfits for…’
Whilst printed shoes will not often be named as ‘wardrobe staples’ (yawnnn), actually if you are willing to be curious and experiment you might find they become a surprising everyday favourite, particularly come the depths of ‘god-will-winter-ever-end’ outfit-pick-me-up stakes.
With this in mind, we did some hunting around some of our favourite stores and below we propose three easy ways to make a radical printed shoe winter outfit friendly.
Matching textiles with a satin bomber jacket up top is a great way to intentionally clash our True Self Black Floral toe tappers.
Intentional Clashing – Try Print on Print. This is a long-time personal favourite for the best way to wear a printed shoe. It begins with being bold in the garments up top and perhaps choosing a ‘neutral-ish’ print – think pinstripes and animal prints – to add instant wearable clash to your look. Take a style like our True Self Floral Satin lace up boots. You can see from the juxtaposed striped lining that the intentional clashing concept is something that was always on our minds when we made this shoe. Using an athletic influence is helpful – think a navy-striped long sleeve raglan tee with cropped denims for daytime, or try an equally high-shine and printed patterned bomber jacket like this one from needsupply for winter evening action.
Another easy intentional clash is matching floral prints with animal prints just as Mother Nature intended - where possible let your flora and fauna match base tones, so in the case of our spectacular True Self boots look for anything set over black, and your clashing will come off nothing short of genius.

Whilst not a print per-say, our new Plenty Lace up in Black Glitter Vegan is also a great call out for clashing textural reference of the metallic kind. Try a fitted knit preferably with iridescent fleck to an equally shimmering satin skirt like this juniper beauty from Lee Mathews with black tights and transcend day-to-night winter dressing.
Monochrome Dressing – We’ve talked a lot about monochrome dressing lately and for good reason too - it has to be one of the easiest ways to look outfit considered with minimal up-top effort. At the moment, we are loving all-lilac-everything, especially as a palette example to match with our Dharma Sunflower Satin toe tappers and if it wasn't sold out already we would 100% be buying this Ganni wool trench from Lissaysgah this winter. Instead we will be searching Savers for a Lilac oversized anything to match with lilac denims (try our friends at rollas for femme palette denim amazingness). Featuring the most perfect flecks of lilac petals in the embroidery, the idea with our Dharma Sunflower satin loafers is to pick up on elements of the palette featured in the print and accentuate the hue. Solid outfits of red and green will also work equally well.
Match them with coloured Tights: Admittedly coloured tights can be as divisive as printed shoes themselves, however hear us out on this point... For instant-sophisticated ‘daytime dressed up’ appeal, we suggest trying French inspired solid orange or red tights with our more subtly printed Moon Dance – 70s Velvet square toe printed lace ups. Add a denim dress - we love this beautiful one from Kowtow - with a coloured turtleneck underneath to match the tights - red or orange will work brilliantly. Not only will you be warm, but the shoes hold just the right amount of navy to ground the whole look in a vintage mood, whilst the accent of orange in the floral print gives a radical point of interest.
Whatever angle you choose, we believe there is something pretty transformative - empowering even - about embracing the all over print shoe to create moments of outfit magic that are hard to replicate with other accessories. We guarantee they will become your go-to pick me up shoes for winter. Radical, Yes!
